Bread-maki

"Makizushi" is a type of sushi. Japanese cuisine is one of my favorite cuisines after Indian. Japanese cuisine is very attractive visually.  Maki is a roll made with  bunch of fillings over rice, which is stuck over sea-weed rolled with the help of a bamboo mat called "makisu". More about sushi and maki roll here.

This post is about a snack item inspired from the Japanese Maki roll, I make for my kids for their school lunch boxes or evening snacks. Very easy to prepare and quick. All you need is some bread slices, some raw vegetables, some cheese, etc...any filling of your choice.

Ingredients:

  • 4 bread slices ( I used 2 white, 2 whole wheat)
  • 2 tbsp grated carrot
  • 4 tsp coriander-mint chutney
  • 1 tbsp feta cheese (about 20 gms )

Recipe:

  • Remove edges of the bread with a bread knife or any sharp knife.

  • Roll the bread slices with a rolling pin as shown in the picture.

  • Crumble the feta cheese and mix well with the carrot.

  • Spread a tsp of mint chutney on a bread slice, and then add some carrot-feta filling. Spread it evenly on the bread.
  • Roll the bread keeping the filling inside.

  • Repeat with all the bread slices and arrange them in a row.
  • These rolls can be sauteed in little butter or oil to make them crispy or can even be baked I din't, as i was making very small quantity.
  • Cut each roll into three pieces and stand them upright -- filling-side up.

  • Beautiful bread-maki is ready. Serve it with fruits or mixed green salad. Just realized that these are the colors of the Indian Flag. You can make this snack for the Independence Day or the Republic Day themed foods.

  • Here is another picture, which I had clicked about 2 years ago. That was my quick bento recipe for my son's lunch box. I have used cheese slice and boiled and chopped spinach and a nori sheet as filling.

Quantity:

  • 1 serving for a child

Notes:

  • Optional fillings --> cheese slices, boiled and chopped spinach, different shredded cheeses like parmesan, cheddar, etc, boiled and mashed peas or potatoes, paneer or tofu with spices, tomato ketchup or tomato chutney,  etc. Mix and match according to your child's favorite things.
  • The bread edges --> what did i do with them...? I have a recipe for those too...keep watching this space...will post it soon... :)
